Proton's dilemma with Perdana

The Terengganu state government will produce detailed proof of the service cost and maintenance of the Proton Perdana V6 Executive cars that it had used as the state's official cars.

This is to justify the Terengganu government's purchase of 14 Mercedes Benz (E200 Kompressors) cars, worth RM3.43 million, to replace the Perdana cars for use by the state executive councillors and senior state government officers.

Defending its decision, the menteri besar's office, in a press statement said that the maintenance cost had been high since the Perdana cars were put into use four years ago.

The statement said the maintenance cost of just two of the cars since 2004 had come up to RM175,229 and RM132,357.

On Monday, Najib said all senior ministry officials and state government executive councillors must use national cars instead of foreign models. This, he added was a long standing policy.

Maintenance cost for a Perdana V6 for 4 years is RM175,000? That's damn high and excessive!

Is Perdana that bad quality? or are the drivers? or something else that we don't know?

The Perdana V6 Club has come to the defence of the Proton Perdana, saying that it is a good car.

V-Sixers secretary Mohd Yazmeen Md Yusof said he was disappointed with what Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said had said about the car.

“If they think it is difficult to maintain, then how can private Perdana owners survive? How could clubs for the car be formed if it really was that bad?”

Mohd Yazmeen said the frequency in which the car had to be sent to the workshop for major repairs depended on the way it was driven.

“My eight-year-old car still has the original gearbox and engine with a mileage of 200,000km. There is no need to change anything if it is maintained well.”

Automotive blogger Paul Tan said maintenance cost should not be a problem as Proton cars are under warranty for the first four years. If this is true, the Terengganu V6 is only 4 years and why did they pay hundreds of thousands for repair and maintenance?

V-Sixers president Alex Yue said the Perdana was a decent car, which should not pose any problems if driven properly.

Alex Yue admitted he had changed his gearbox and drive shaft of his four-year-old car, but he said his “aggressive” driving style was the cause of his car’s problems.

“I have also driven a BMW 325 and a Honda Accord, and both had gearbox problems,” Alex Yue said.

I have never own any Perdana and thus had no such experience to relate. I had own a Saga and a Wira and I can say that Saga is reliable except that it is fragile and had poor road holding if you drive 110kph.

But I owned a BMW and had never had problem with the gearbox or engine. I once owned an Accord and it also had no such problems with the gearbox.

But one thing is very certain and empirical: when I get to the toll booth, I often observed that those who drives Proton cars will open the door to pay the toll or swipe the Smartcard. I have yet to see other makes of cars doing the same thing. Maybe, it is a cultural aspects of Proton owners to do it that way as a gesture or a symbol of harmony.

the reason the maintenance cost is high because there are number of irresponsible peoples who marked-up too much.that's why.he should dig deeper before making such announcements.

Terlalu tinggi kos penyelenggaraan yang dinyatakan. Mengapa jadi begini? Macam ada something wrong dalam isu ni. Harus dikaji secepat mungkin supaya tidak berjangkit..

Agak-agak dalam RM175,229 dan RM132,357, berapa yang masuk kocek agaknya? RM1,000 , RM5,000 , RM10,000 atau lebih...

I used to drive a Proton Perdana. The first generation, the one I drove, had gearbox problems but not all the units had this problem. But a significant number of units experienced this problem that caused the owners to raise the alarm.

I understand the current generation of Proton Perdana is quite ok.

If they do proceed to investigate further into each services, another can of worm will be opened.

This is thru the grape wine, what "they" do is "they" work with the service people and the same parts or components are replaced claiming faultyness over and over again. They just rotate the cars around....

Again, I heard this thru the grape wine....but possible theory and possible explanations why the bills run up so high. Imagine changing the gear box...and not once but multiple times...

Those bozos sure do not know how to take care of cars.

Drive a perdana, maintenance is RM175K, when driving a E200, the maintenance will be RM450K.

It is not the car's fault, it is the idiot driving it.

Howsy,

At times I don't think it's the power window; probably it is the phobias.

Modern Youth,

I think you may have the point. The Mb must find out why maintenance is so high. I don't believe it is.

Tangansotong,

Saya sokong awak.

Mankanan,

Memang ada yang masuk kocek.

Bayi,

Somehow, I am still hearing of such complains from the owners and taxi drivers. It may still exist.

Dewnasing,

I think you are not being constructive.

Potongsaga,

No lah; there's no such thing.

Moo,

That's harsh! I think we have to look at the issue objectively.

It is very very easy to become rich and famous in capitalism democracy government system such as in Malaysia.

Just remember this, Bankers-businessmen and property developers are at the top of human food chain in this system.

As long as you pump in billions into infrastructure construction and property development industry. You will have populace support.

As long as you pump in billions for IT project, you will have more party members to support you, but of course, first you must ensure they all have education background in IT.Cinta IT, Suka IT, Belajar IT.

As long as you spend money in buying Mercedes,BMWs and other luxury cars, you will garner the support of the businessmen’ class since they are doing the job as importers and distributors. These businessmen then will pay money to promoters to sing praises on you and increase your popularity level so that you can continue to become a politician.

Remember this, the 3 golden rule of democracy:
Majority wins
Majority rules
Majority always right!

So dance!!you politician!Dance you must!

Dance to capitalists' tunes.
Speak against capitalism, you will bundle out of office in a blink of eyes.

Perdana V6 is a decent car.

In fact, all proton car can be decent, if Proton factory are not run by cronies that supplies inferior parts, e.g. overpriced suspensions, absorber. And those SIMPLE part is where about road handling.

Perdana parts are not top notch but I think all parts can last more than 200,000km. After 200,000, then all replaceable part ,gasket should be change accordingly, BUT no parts can exceed the car purchase price.

Just take Azalina RM250 screw drivers, RM1000++ maintenance book example , that explain all this rocket price maintenance.

Please stop arguing about the good, the bad of Proton Perdana. I am proud with Malaysian (can) make car although it is not as good as others.

And the ugly: Continue reading the story created supporting my argument because I am Anok Penyu Putih from South China Sea.

I agreed with the saying "in politic either you kill or being killed".

Ceritanya begini biar kawan terangkan satu cerita lawak " Citer Negori Kayo" :-

Kepala runsing tertakir seperti sejarah Seberang Takir sebelum makanan tiba.

Anok Penyu Putih.

The stated maintenance cost looks suspiciously high. Even replacing the gearbox with a new one would cost about Rm 25K. On top of that, weren't the cars still under warranty ?

The average family man driving a Perdana V6, and maintains it properly e.g. including gearbox oil and filter changed at the recommended mileage, probably won't have any problems with the auto transmission.

However, my regular mechanic tells me the Perdana V6 auto transmission does have an Achilles heel. Under stressful conditions - continuous high-speed driving for hours or stop-start traffic in low gear all the time, and the transmission oil tends to overheat.

If the car is heavily used under such conditions, there is a likelihood the gearbox will fail prematurely.

Most family cars DON'T get driven like that all the time, so most users should be OK, but there are always people who have need to drive it like that.

Did I miss something here? As kittykat46 mentioned, aren't the cars under warranty ?

If they are under warranty, why is there a need to pay such a huge amount for repairs. Either the "repairers" or Proton are making a pile of money from this sorry episode.

Anonymous said...

She can't screw, she need the driver to do that for her. $250/- per screw.

wtf

Appreciate the genuine humour, Mave. It's difficult to find light-heartedness in socio-political blogs now.

Maverick SM said...

Moo_t,

Let's wait for Proton to comment on the maintenance problem and the warranty issue.

Anok Penyu Putih,

You are humourous!

Kittykat46,

You have good pointers but I don't see it as the observed problems and how it cost RM137,000 for repair.

Purple Haze,

They didn't claim from warranty; they paid for the repairs.

Tanie,

Thanks but I thought I should just make it light and enjoyable to read

YB Mat Said, your choice is perfect, PROTON will be history soon. Let that mamak kutty a/l sikander kutty cry in his grave.

Maverick SM said...

Putumayam,

I think Mat Said is correct in his decision and I agree with him; the fact remains that proton must do an indepth study of the problems with Perdana to overcome the disappointment and provide confidence in their product.
