Raja Muda: Govt policies discriminatory and exclusive

The Raja Muda of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah said today that governments should not set down discriminatory laws or policies but must ensure inclusive development through empowerment.

"No segment of society must be disrespected, discredited and disenfranchised," he said in his address at the 21st LawAsia Conference here.

He said that no single group in any country should feel their contributions are unrecognized or unwanted.

This is a clear submission by our future King and current Regent of Perak, that our government do indeed set down discriminative policies and laws. Ironically, we observed that Umno leaders such as Ali Rustam, Khaled Nordin and Khir Toyo contextually are implying that there's not enough "discriminations done". As reported in Malaysiakini today, Mohd Ali Rustam says Umno must dictate government policy in order for the party to regain lost support. He says Umno members feel they have not had enough influence on government policy (Read the news at: Malaysiakini - Link).

"If Barisan Nasional wishes to regain the confidence of the Malays, the concept of parti menguasai kerajaan (the party heading the government) must be looked at seriously," he said.

Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that Umno had compromised and accept the policy of 30% Bumiputera equity ownership though they form 70% of the country's population (Read the news here).

To own 70%? You have to pay for it, not given to you, not free, unless you rob, steal and murder! You don't own wealth because you want it and lay sleeping and start threatening. Go work for it and earn it; you can have more if you have the ability and energy. I too want to be a billionaire!

its a pity , with the umno election and nomination around the corner. bankrupt candidates are looking for cheap publicity. You never let a single party dictate government in a 13 party government. i still remember Tun Mahathir once said that umno alone can run the government with a simple majority it has in parliment...it was the begining of the arrogant egoistic leadership.parti memerintah kerajaan is ok if barisan di beri mandat memerintah kerajaan dan bukan umno sahaja, kalau nak pencalongan buat kerja bukan press statement saje...

"Umno vice-president Mohd Ali Rustam says Umno must dictate government policy in order for the party to regain lost support, adding that grassroot members are disappointed that a lot of their suggestions and wishes have not been fulfilled by the party. As such, many feel they cannot influence government policy."

Sounds like the grassroots in Melaka, have overlooked the fact that there are other less fortunate elsewhere in the country who are also disappointed.

This is typical of the mentality behind their debacle. "If it did not work the first time, do the same, the second time and the third, and the fourth, ..... ad infinitum "

But, with his 23 nominations thus far ( as per Malaysian Insider ), his views are not giving him enough traction - lets hope he spends a huge pile of money go back to Melaka quietly. Until the next party elections,... ( politicians with smaller war chests tend to have lesser dreams as well )

And as an extension to this, 'the party policies are the government views,....not including others'

From the Rajah Muda of Perak:(MI)
"In his speech today, Raja Nazrin called for the abandonment of what he called "the silo mentality where we only look up at what is happening and not beside us at what others are experiencing."
He made a case instead for policies which empower through inclusiveness."

If this happens, UMNO becomes irrelevant ( a much abused term I'd say )

Over a longer time period, one would look at this as a process of political transition in Msia. Where it will lead us will be determined by the players.

Thank you YH. But why did the council endorse the new CJ's appoinment.......

Maverick SM said...

Vesu,

It's not about just politics; it's about absolute power to dictate and dominate the wealth of others without efforts.

Jefus,

I won't know whether Umno is relevant or not; but I know globalisation and internationalism will swallow the nation and drive our nation down the abyss.

with these type of UMNO leaders....UMNO is just "killing" their own kind. They have not heard of the word..'work".

UMNOPutras get too many free contracts ...and the ordinary Malays colleagues in my office just work as hard as the rest of us.

Maverick SM said...

Artchan,

Let's leave it with the Malays, ordinary or not to sort out their own. Afterall, whatever said and done will hurt us no more as the policies are already discriminatory in itself and we have been fending for ourselves without any assistance from the govt except for those within MCA and Gerakan and MIC.

Mav,

Democracy is about majority. The majority always rule.

How the majority rules is another question.

You are questioning the right of majority to rule. If you don't like how the majority rules in Malaysia, it is always your option to choose another country to reside.

Malaysia today is ruled by the majority. Rightly or wrongly, they rule with discrimination and bias. But the last time I checked the constitution, it is not supposed to be that way. So how did it become so?

Every child grows up, so does countries. People think Malaysia at 50 should have a political and social environment similar to the West. But western societies have been developed over hundreds of years. And during the process, went through their own trials and tribulations. We are just going through our own.

They say the fun is in getting there, which is why we bitch and moan instead of choosing to run away.

If UMNO wants 70% or 100% of the wealth in this country, the means is there. Legally, it can be done because majority rules.

But then again, these are only rhetoric expressed by Ali Rustam and Khaled Nordin. In response to Liow's call to abolish the NEP's 30%.

We are just being racist (and discriminatory) when we associate these statements as official stands from UMNO and the Malays or MCA and the Chinese.

These rhetoric are just positions of individuals aspiring to be a political warlords. We can choose to be apprehensive and discriminate the organization because of it or ignore it.

The freedom to choose is still ours.

Is outcome of Munawar's appeal indicative of what we can expect from Zaki Azmi...new Boss of the Malaysian Judiciary
Chief Justice Zaki Azmi beginning to throw his true colours...

Will he be able to be INDEPENDENT of UMNO and his past friends, and be able to be concerned only with justice...

Will he be a progressive judge only concerned with JUSTICE - not fearful of developing the law so that justice be done...or will he just remain a tool of UMNO and his 'old friends'.

Also noted that Zaki Azmi was a businessman with involvement in a string of companies - and if so, he must recuse himself from any case involving those companies and/or related companies or even companies whereby his once fellow member of the Board of Directors or management is involved.

RaZ,

Your reasons so appended clearly shows your intellectual capability and the lack of social philosophy. I won't go into a protracted and contemptuous discussion with you on this for it shames me to read of someone whom I had always believed to have the common sense and intellectual ability to discern between jurisprudence and the social philosophy.

Majority rule is not about domination, stealing, robbing and discrimination; it it is, it will give rise to communism and anarchy. Look and observe the world and other countries; there are majority rule in UK, USA and Australia and non had abuses the power of the majority to discriminate and oppress.

I thought you are a Muslim and should have abided with the teachings in the Quran. You words betrayed the virtue of a virtuous religion. I felt Sorry for you.

My New Dawn,

Let Zaki do his part; it is too early to prejudge him.

There they go being high and mighty again.

These people are truly fuedal in their outlook and thinking.

Remember those olden days silat movies where ruffians, thugs and lanuns can just grab any female they like and carry them over their shoulders going: Ha Ha Ha,
probably AR would love to be is said era.

I've had it with these people even since my reporting says for their sheer "I am great" arrogance.

As for 70 percent: Well....

Imagine getting pink forms that is 70 percent of all new listing?

"Aku kaya! Ha Ha Ha! Kaya!"

No wonder AR wants to be Deputy Pres.

Wasalam.

Russ Kühl said...

Hahahha Mav,

You can dish out criticism but can't take it huh? Too emotional about the point where we have the option to reside in another country? Why? It applies to me too if I think this country is not worth living in. That is the power of choice.

Using religion to put me down? Tsk tsk tsk.. Look in the mirror and see what you have become.

I am merely pointing out the priorities which most people seem to either leave out or do not take into account when analyzing and formulating opinions.

Majority rule is about domination by the majority. Whether the majority is a bunch of crooks, Taliban Muslims or Communist.

There is nothing wrong in the various human social order including the Hindu caste system as long as the majority of the people accept them.

Those who do not accept leaves for a better place (or create one) or fight to change.

As for the discriminatory NEP in which you say is a means to rob, steal and murder? As far as I know, the majority accepts NEP.

Policies don't rob, steal or murder. Some people do. And it does not matter what color they are.

You comments suggest that you are not happy because the Malays have NEP and because of that do not have to work to earn the wealth. You forget that among the Malays, they have to fight for that same wealth reserved for them.

The non-Malays have to compete with everyone else (including the Malays) for the other 70%. And those that did not succeed tend to blame the Malays and the NEP.

So you claim its not fair. But what comes first? Social order or jurisprudence?

PS

So you too wanna be a billionaire too huh?

You won't definitely become one through your current profession. You and I know that to be one, one needs a little bit of capital and a whole lot of sucking up. We may have that little bit of capital but we do not have the tenacity to suck up big time.

It is not about color or merits. It is about working very hard on sucking up. Just ask Vincent Tan, Ananda, Lim Goh Thong (RIP) or even Daim.

If based solely on merits, target millionaire cukup le. It still can be done in this country and I can attest to it.

when there is a pressing need to change, then, change it will be.

take a look at china, vietnam, when their economies were dire, they had no choice but to open up to capitalism ( no matter what they wrap it up as ), although slowly, but open they did. and in 20 yrs' time, the change was for all to see.

so, globalization, if the government chooses to stonewall it today, it will come and visit us, ready or not sometime in the future,... if our economy is unready then we will end up at a disadvantage....

as much as the government would have us think that we are economically sound, and recession will not encumber us, the reality is there, ..... this is global.

moo_t,

UMNO, MCA, MIC, PKR, PAS, DAP or the now defucnt MCP, they all the same.

A political party is a community of people of similar mindset on how to govern a country. Strength in numbers. Some preach different ideologies. But all preach for the betterment of society (usually in monetary terms.)

Nothing wrong in a group of people trying to better their lives. Be it your immediate family, clan, kampong, people from your area, people with same mindset, race or even mankind.

Those who dream for a world of equality, justice and freedom should die and go to heaven. That's the only place in existence.

For the rest of us, we continue to live in this very real world where corruption, injustice and prejudice prevails. Hopefully, we can do our part to help it change for the better.

But I know many only talk about it but still fuel the sins for their own betterment.

Institutionalized racism for greediness of power and money.

We was born here because of fate but we didn't choose to be here. Sadly choice can be made but not to everyone.

Russ Kühl said...

kimho8,

Race is a social construct. Institutions are just a bodies of people with a common objective.

Greed, however is a human characteristic. It is not a bad thing but too much of it and it becomes one of the seven sins. Greed, after all, is the underlying foundation of a capitalist world.

Fate applies to all. Just as choices. It just that some people do not know how to make the right choices.

People tend to quickly blame everything else but themselves for the situation they are in. More often, they are in that situation because of choices they made before.

Just as you said that you did not choose to be born here, we can say that we did have any choice in our forefathers decision to open the country to other migrating races.

And for as long as we have this perception of 'us' and 'them' we are never ready for a 'bangsa Malaysia.'

Discrimination? Sure it exist. From your point of view, the Malays discriminate against the other race. From the Malays' point of view, they are being discriminated against by cronyism. And from the cronies' point of view, they are being discriminated by nepotism. Maybe even KJ feels he is being discriminated because he is only the 'in-law.'

And that's the reality. We discriminate, even with our own children.

You say that you have no interest in my point of view yet appreciate my correction and comments. If you are a woman, it is understandable.

I think by far, you made the most significant comment here - learning. I learned about your perception related to this issue same as Mav's and everyone elses' view for that matter.

If everyone subscribes to the a particular point of view, then there is not much to learn here.

The purpose of this interactive forum is to exchange ideas and learn. Not to make frens or enemies.

As long as we open ourselves to learning, the world will be a better place.

Dear Raz,

I failed to find rational logic in your argument, perhaps because I practice the different school of philosophy.

Do you know the man call ZhuangZi? 2000 years ago, he told people about relativity and the pathetic short of human life. Things are keep changing, and you can never use one standard forever.

If your definition of democracy are "rules of majorities", please leave the definition to YOURSELF.

IMHO, democracies are about "everyone follow the majorities, but respect the minorities".

Follow your methodology, then USA invading IRAQ is "legal" ;). According to your definition, USA population are many time bigger than IRAQ, so majorities "rules". ;)

Re Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimension "Malaysian societies are highly rule-oriented with laws, rules, regulations, and controls in order to reduce the amount of uncertainty, while inequalities of power and wealth have been allowed to grow within socienty. These cultures are more likely to follow a caste system that does not allow significant upward mobility of its citizens. It creates a situation where leaders have virtually ultimate power and authority, and the rules, laws and regulations developed by those in power, reinforce their own leadership and control."
