TdC is DYSFUNCTIONAL; TdC is disconnected from the market.
TdC needs: a Total Overhaul, a Paradigm Shift, a new Business Plan, a set of Turnaround Initiatives and Divisional Initiative,s and some Quick Wins!
Afzal admitted that these are vital because TdC has too many leakages in operating expenses. Its spending for network is high, it is too dependent on vendors’ solution, it lacks direction, has no clarity and, most importantly, its product offerings are too complex.
“This company has structural issues and people work in silos. We have to be conscious that we are dysfunctional as an organisation and we have to do basic cleaning up as we can get simple things wrong.
“If we do not change everything in the peripheral, we cannot achieve the target and that is why a complete overhaul is needed,’’ chief executive officer Afzal Abdul Rahim told StarBiz in an interview.
He said the structural problems came about because “people were too busy organising functions around personalities and this resulted in them building silos and empires which led to no synchronisation.”
“There is clearly a lack of direction and clarity and everyone only thought of his own work. (TdC has been looking inwards) and that is why TdC is disconnected from the market. We did not know what the market wanted,’’ Afzal said.
Afzal came on board in October last year and that is what he discovered after more than three months at the helm.
He has a three-year mandate from Khazanah Nasional Bhd to turn TdC around.
TdC has been suffering from internal hemorrhage; it has been losing money for more than a decade.
Turnaround? How are they doing it?
From observations, they are:
(1) Removing existing executives using VSS and parking new executives into the old job role (85% of the executives were replaced - 23 out of 27);
(2) Cost Reduction Initiatives: (i)Cutting operating expenditures from RM100 mil to RM40 mil. & moving office from it's Jalan Tun Razak leased-premises to its own premise at Glenmarie in Shah Alam.;TdC is DYSFUNCTIONAL; TdC is disconnected from the market.

(4) De-coupling from the United Engineers (M) Bhd (UEM) group and Time Engineering Bhd.
Will it work? Theoretically yes; empirically ... behemoth task and onerous. Turnaround is not just simply: putting on the right man on the bus and taking out the wrong people off; it is not just about having a good business plan and flattening the steep hierarchy. It is about a strong leadership, a strategic business action plan which are goal-centric with fixed time frame, a high performance team supporting and driving change, and a dynamic cashflow system which are driving the revenue growth & collections with a team of researchers empowered to innovatively drive cost-reduction without sacrificing or trade-off with elements that are contributing positively to the organizational processes. Most of all, the change and impact which provides positive contributions towards organizational goals and objectives are sustainable and becomes the new culture within the organizational system.
What about Rewards? But you can't have or sustain a high performance team without a strategic reward system: the rewards must be result-based, rewarding the "Lembu"and not just the "Sapi", and it motivates - the people on the job and continually drives their performances from good to great.
Strong leadership is not just about a good-talking leader or a friendly person; he leads by example and he has the vision and foresight of the businesses and he has the ability to identify good performers; most of all, he and his executives have the right attitude and are of strong character. However, he can do no better if his team are incompetent or inexperience : qualifications aren't just enough; these executives must possess on-the-job experiences, experiences in complexity and chaos management, experiences of similar failures from without and within, and excellent skills in Project Management, Financial Management, strategic Business Management and Risk Managemen; and most of all, they have the "Right Attitude" and with business-centric mentality.
Critical Failure Factors: mediocrity and ketuanan mentality, class & color differentiations, lack of focus or unsustainable focus, a new crony system replacing the old, talks well and talks often about performance instead of driving & ensuring performance are acted upon and measured on, good at meetings as well as spending too much time in meetings talking about performance and not spending time with the people on the job to manage the products and services to the customers/clients on time, with the right quality and at a competitive price, as well as managing the effective cost of the products and services.

All new CEOs will want to put their core people in-charge of specific portfolios.
Being visit their Tun Razak office before, pretty curious why they leased the place for all their executive than a small node office for sales people.
Honestly,if I am not being their their SS13 chilling data center (way colder than TM Myloca data center) , I really have no idea what business TdC is in to.

Afzal is capable of turning around TdC, and he has already decoupled from UEM and Time Engineering through his joint shareholding with Khazanah.
The problem with TdC (under Khazanah) was that it had no mission. It had one under Renong (UMNO) where it was supposed to provide TM with some friendly competition. When the shit hit the fan in '97 and Khazanah took over, it cannot decide TdC's role because of its interest in TM.
TdC is an offshoot of Time Engineering's fiber trunks under the North-South Highway. It started as a telco wholesale, then dabbled in retail via Adam 017 and lastly into the internet access (hence called TdC.)
Going back to their roots as a wholesaler should rekindle their past glory. But the only reason they can do that now is because of their corporate decoupling.
TdC still has a very big hole in their balance sheet. Turning around is not the issue. Shuffling accounts and accepting large write-offs is another story.
TdC has about RM 2 billion in equity after deducting its RM 2.1 billion in accumulated losses. In addition, it has RM 1 billion in borrowings. To make it reasonably profitable, it needs a make at least RM 100 million a year after interest of about RM 50 - 70 million. That is a tall order.
I doubt the wholesale business can solely contribute to the profit objective. To do those numbers it needs to (1) get back into the retail business. And that means competing with TM's broadband. And (2) invest to replace their obsolete (and some non-existing) network equipment. And did I mention that TdC only have about RM 200 million in cash. Oh, TdC have a sizable stake in Digi Telecom too (in 2007 about RM 1 billion less now I think) but Afzal is not allowed to touch that.
Turning around TdC is practically impossible without restructuring the the company's financial.
Afzal may just be a patsy for Khazanah.
Khazanah conned the government into giving TdC a 3G license. Then it turnaround and sold it off to Digi Telecom. (Quick win - Ali Baba style)
Now that Khazanah has put TdC under an SPV (Pulau Kapas Venture Sdn. Bhd.) I would not be suprised if it pulls another fast one again and drop the whole shit on Afzal's lap.

My ex=company was their client. Used to pay bills of more than RM4,000 every month. Then one day Time stopped billing the company. I called to check.

I think TdC's debt has been parred down to about RM500mil and will be expected to dispose off the DiGi's shares to enhance its cash flow position.

Time Dot Com is a very poorly managed business with terrible managers. Most of the senior management needs to be removed and replaced with competent people hired based on merit - that's my honest opinion.
And they would do well to look beyond just one race for management talent.
Good luck to Afzal, but I don't think he will succeed. He doesn't have the mandate to do the above. Most likely they will end up with half-hearted efforts and cosmetic changes which do not have real impact on their operating efficiency.

Afzal, you need good people to help you to turn around the company, not over turn the company. Kicking out bad hats (like me:) will help but you need to ensure that good people are coming in before the bad ones are out!!!
I heard there was a guy by the name Mark Lim hired by TIME a few months back but he left after a month! I heard a lot of good things about this guy, from both internal and external sources and I personally know him many years back. He is really good in his job and his previous company had developed him into a good leader. He was climbing up the corporate ladder and gaining his recognition in the ICT world. I am not sure what magic did you do to convince him to give up his comfortable job and join TIME.
I am also not sure what is the reason that he left TIME but TIME should have retained this kind of people by all means. It's better to have 1 of these good people rather than hiring and feeding 10 useless staff.
Apart from that, cutting cost is not just about kicking out people and offering VSS. You need to look into the structure and staff morale too. You can have great products but without proper structure and people to sell them, it's as good as having none...

I believe Time has always been a come and go at will for some. It's a culture that is being re-addressed now and moving forward with the clearance of da deadwoods and the new management team. FYI, the CMO is not LGH u DINGBAT, it's a person whom i personally believe can make things happen unlike the previous clowns.

You mean the Mark Lim from VADS? You must be kidding. This can't be true. I was in VADS for a while and this nice gentleman is one of the best asset to VADS. He is technically sound and has his way of managing his team and business unit. When I was working in VADS, I heard many headhunters and MNCs approached him but none suceeded in getting him. BTW Afzal, LGH can only be good if he could improve on his people management skills, service management in Tdc will improve as well. I can say LGH is very sharp and make correct decision at the critical moment, but how far can he alone go? TEAMWORK is the keyword my friend. Even if you employ a superman, he still needs a team of people to assist him for things to work in Tdc.
I totally agreed with the previous comment that in order for you to turn around Tdc, you need to look into the current structure and people issues. If you have all these things in place and operation is running smoothly, it's time for you to shout...TM here we come!...but now, you can only look at how TM pull your customers away due to the poor services provided

If i may add, previously TDC had some great pool of talents among the executives.However their immediate bosses was never inspiring enough to motivate them to work harder and the downline impact from sales and revenue has further demoralized further.
Now that we have this lil "rascals" left on their own accord and with a bit more of steel in the management, we can only move for the better. As of today, we have improved on reducing the loss compared to last year and given a good 3-4 years i'm pretty sure we can turn things around. By then we'll diversify to see how we can work together with Tier 1 telcos to release competitive products & services.
I must say there's a renewed spirit within a team and seeing so many old faces making a return tops the morale too.
So friends, why don't we end this squabble for now. Give us a chance to serve you better!!

I believe a lot people are not happy as the current mgmt has done nothing to increase increase revenue. What they have done is manage to reduce opex trough VSS, which I believe is a no brainer!
The real crunch is to increase revenue which the 14th. ceo mentioned that it will happen in the 3/4 years time. If that is the strategy, then the 15th. CEO has his work cut out!

I'd say the focus now shifts to how to maximise the Tech, Products, Sales and other Div to get into the upward trend.
Bear in mind, the previous tenacious Empire called FM & Network Planning under a certain "wizards" have been deposed and units merged to support the biz activties.
We have began on a bright note unlike previous mgmt and we can only do better once the transition on new products takes place and the vocal communication from what used to be the internal IT/Tech/Product dingbat heads are heard upon.

I can see a lot of improvement in place, there are now processes
The whole team knows what to do when a crisis happen.
He has managed to stop a lot of work being done us or being thrown to us.
He listens and gets things done
I didn’t like him, when he came in but now things are better
We focus only on fault

Wahh banyak juga loser kat sini. Setelah sekian lama masih tak bersara lagi dari time dotcom. Memang patut, u orang semua kena cincang. Dahlah tak berwawasan, buat kerja pun cam sial, teknikal lemah, suka kritik orang atas and kalo untung ada pass sampai diploma. Patut bersyukur dengan adjustment yg dibuat dan bonus yg diberi. Inilah dia, diberi betis, hendakan peha, diberi peha hendakan buah dada.....
aku masuk tdc aku ade adv.diploma je. mana ade senior appreciate aku, kerja diorg lagi sial dr aku, bila ade masalah kite junior selesaikan, senior smua kepala kura2, lebih baik masuk hutan hidup sama binatang. apalagi diorg ade masters, ade degree, rasa degree diorg beli keh? jadi loser lagi baik drp jadi puk1. aku makan tulang dgn bulu je, mana ade daging? daging semua dah bagi buaya buaya
Patutnyer, hang dah kena lama dah resign. Apa boleh buat, sekadar adv diploma kena duk merempat kat Time. Ada patut juga junior, senior. Sampai bila pun duk jadi junior gak and blaja fix benda benda remeh temeh jeh. Yg senior ada banyak lagi benda lebih penting lagi utk dipikirkan. Tapi nih semua mana budak budak junior tahu. Tahu berasap 6 kali sehari, komplen komplen macam puki mak indo mee..oklah. Tulah beza, kalo dulu mak suh blaja baik baik kan ada peluang nak naik. Nih pehh kawin dan buat 4 anak...pastu jadi junior seumur hidup, susah gak...
