Bartenders Dilemma

Selangor Mufti Datuk Mohd Tamyis said "It is haram to feed wives and children from earnings associated with alcohol.

He was commenting on a report yesterday of a bartender competition where the top winners were Malays.

Perak Mufti Harussani said Muslims should be barred from working as bartenders as Muslims are forbidden to serve alcohol.

Isn't it's getting very difficult for Muslims? What about Muslims working for non-Muslims? Wouldn't they be earning money from people who are associated with non-halal activities? For example, there are many Muslims who are working with Genting Highland, Resort World, Sports Toto, Maxis (who owned Usaha Tegas who in turn owned 1+3D Sweepstake). What about those companies who pay taxes from non-halal activities and the money from such taxes are used to pay civil servant wages most of whom are Muslims? What about multi-nationals corporations (MNCs) who may have earned their profits from non-halal business such as speculating in share markets, currency trading which are a sort of gambling as it is a zero -sum game? It may be observed that most non-Muslim who earned their monies from non-halal activities are joint-venture partners to Muslims such as MMC-Gamuda alliance, Khazanah-Temasek, etc, etc? Can Mohd Tamyis and Harussani explain the unholy alliance and it's association?

Deputy Prime Minister, Najib however said that Islamic religious officials must not be afraid to modernise their approach. Najib urged the Muftis and Imams to do away with archaic translations of the Quran. According to Najib, some scholars still choose to follow the way the religion was interpreted 500 years ago which is no longer relevant today.

Najib said there is a lot of misinterpretation in the religion that needs to be corrected and Muslims should change their perception of wealth accumulation.

Isn't it confusing and perplexing? Is there such thing as archaic translation of Quran? I don't think so as there is only one way to interpret them, that is, literally. Is Najib advocating that the Quran can be translated in an innovative and creative way? That's what seems to be if you read his speech at NST Prime News Page 6 June 16, 2007.

Was Najib's speech directed to Tamyis and Harussani?

The last time I checked, this country is still called Malaysia, not Arabia.

As some Muslims keep reminding me "Islam is a complete way of life". Does that mean you make every possible stricture mentioned in the Koran or Sunnah illegal in the country for Muslims ?

Yeah, shouldn't Muslims be forbidden from owning, managing and working in commercial Banks which charge interest on loans and pay out interest on deposits ?
Shouldn't Muslims be forbidden from buying insurance. Forbidden from working in insurance companies ?

Shouldn't Muslims be barred from working with our national airlines where they served liquor on board, or do we need two types of airlines for MAS? One that serves liquor and the other that don't and only meant for Muslims. What about hotels where Muslim staff work? Oh, how about this country where Anchor and Carlsberg beers are brewed; and Hennessy and Otard brandies are sold? Shouldn't these religious bigots be migrating to Saudi Arabia and not reside in a place where arak is sold? Forget about the bar-tenders. How about the Muslim staff who are working in Carlsberg and Anchor-Guinness? Do they have to resign and who is going to feed them if they do? Looks like we may have to split this nation into two, the way I look at it, one for drinkers (non-Muslims) and the other for Muslims. Every one must agree, things are getting more and more ridiculous each day whenever these religious bigots open their mouths. *sigh*

dear mr maverick,

as far as i'm concerned, working with non muslims is OK, as long as they're not indulged with any non-halal activities.

As for Maxis, i know that it is related, but again, as far as i'm concerned, Ananda Krishnan owns Pan Malaysian Pools through his Usaha Tegas, not Maxis (correct me if i'm wrong, my info is based from the proscpectus on its IPO some years ago.) TQ.

You have a point there Mave. You relate to higher and detail area. Still, refer to the comment from Mufti, he said the Haram - was working as bartenders, that clearly associate with alcohol directly.

Its a good thing that mufti made a comment rather he kept quiet to himself.

Still by relating to company that involve in haram activities as you mentioned... for me personally, I blame the country leader!!! (and kerabat Pahang)

If this goes on, let this country have 2 set of currencies. One for Muslim and one for non-Muslim.

God knows where the note in their wallet comes from.
