Melindraf: UMNO, the new Hindraf (Part 2)

When I posted earlier about the Penang UMNO demonstration as reported at NST entitled: Penang Umno supporters demonstrate against NEP changes in my article entitled: Melindraf: UMNO, the new Hindraf, some readers asked me why I used the call-name melindraf, and why not cronydraf or any other name.

Maybe, you should help me to re-name this group of demonstrators. You can also read Zainol Abideen's blog and view more of the demonstration pictures from here.

[Quote from NST news report with emphasis]:

Shouts of `Hidup Melayu` rang around the landmark Komtar building here today as 1,000 Umno members gathered to protest the DAP-PKR coalition government's intent to change New Economic Policy practices in the state. Those taking part in the gathering demanded that the state government leave the NEP alone and also called on chief minister Lim Guan Eng to ensure the Malays were not marginalised under the new state administration. They said he should not turn Penang into another Singapore.

Police, including light strike force personnel, were on standby as the crowd started to gather along Jalan Magazine after Friday prayers about 2.15pm. They carried banners which read Jangan Hapuskan Dasar Ekonomi Baru (do not abolish the NEP), Kami Melayu Pulau Pinang menyokong Kepimpinan Pak Lah (We the Malays of Penang support Pak Lah (prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's leadership) and Hidup Melayu (long live the Malays). (Remarks: Long live Indian Muslims or Malay? Are they Malays? Read the earlier articles: MIMYM and KIMMA) No water cannon and tear gas troops !)

State Umno secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim later told reporters that the gathering was organised as the Malays wanted to vent their anger against the state government's stand on the NEP. (Remarks: was it the Malays or Indians venting their anger?)

He said any move to introduce the open tender system in Penang would only lead to the marginalisation of the Malays. "We will plan to hold similar gatherings in the future and we will submit our memorandum to the governor soon," he said. (Remarks: How does an open tender system marginalized the Malays when the tender qualification is for PKK Bumiputera registered Class A Contractor???)

In an immediate response, Lim said the state government did not have any problems who wanted to take part in gatherings.

"It is all part of freedom of speech. However, I am surprised that they did not give me any memorandum. This is the first time a demonstration has been held but those who organised it did not have any memorandum to be submitted," he said.

Lim said the newly-formed state government was willing to listen to what the people had to say, including those from Umno.

However, he stressed that the state government would proceed with its plan to have open tenders as it was the best method to cut out corruption, cronyism and systematic inefficiency. "It looks like Umno has failed in its bid to run down the new state government. There are only trying to draw the people's attention away from their own internal problems," he said.

P/S: Hasilox, can you assist?

No water canon or tear gas? This demonstration seems fake and well planned.
With or without NEP, the fate of Malay Penangite will always be same. Most Malays know that NEP is for UMNOputera not Bumiputera.

i quote here:
"CNN: If you were to conduct a class for future leaders, what lessons would you emphasize?

LKY: Well, I would say first, don't try and seek popularity. Popularity is an evanescent, fickle thing. Gain respect. That's not easy to achieve, and if you don't misbehave or squander it, it will last. The modern society, they take polls, straw polls, and they govern according to what the polls show, which way the wind is blowing. I think that's a disaster. That's not leadership. "

talking about being like Singapore, ironically, it looks like LGE is being pushed in that direction.

huh? the protestors look darker than Malays; in fact my old eyes see Indians; no?

no tear gas is good. democracy swings both ways; anyone can express themselves.. but

can someone point out to me if the malays (sorry to point out the race here) not even kena anything can feel INSTANTLY threatened;

how the heck do they think the other races have felt these past 30years hah?

Can people just accept that we (every color) are Malaysians, Rakyat...same for all...

or as my mother would say "you think only you got mother give birth to you ah?"

I am more terrorfied that anwar becomes PM - don't ask me why!!!

I did not believe all the charges against him all those years ago

and now I don't believe he wants to be PM because he loves all the rakyat either!!

Woman's intuition lah!

The Umno malays are seeking equal rights in Penang?? Its not like those people on the streets got anything from Gerakan before. Give LGE a break la! He just formed the government and has to learn a lot in a short span of time. why those people are venting their frustration on him so fast. Its not like its been 2 years or so! Btw the NEP benefits a certain group of people only. Its very one sided and bias. I wonder why these people are feeling it. It is a shame that they don’t rationalize before they take it to the streets.

Asyraf,

Did you really think most Malays know that NEP is for UMNOputera not Bumiputera? I don't think so as I have many Malay friends and clients who don't think so.

Jefus,

Penang can never be like Singapore, no matter how hard LGE try. Singapore adopted aristocracy; we are far from democracy; we are more of a feudal system.

Gobloking,

It is most unfortunate that the nation is filled with people who only sees their own interests and worry about their own benefits while at the same time they were blind to their acts of discrimination but were fearful of losing the presumed privilege which they classify as discrimination. Sad tale.

Nesh's Bru,

These people must be given a copy of the NEP policy to read. The policy was to assist the poor, not assist UMNO. The poor include all the citizens of Malaysia.

I wonder why nobody point out how much NEP has helped large numbers of Malays and in the process how many 'middle-man' benefited.

Basing that to ask Penang Gov to try and outdo that. Going on the street and was told each got paid RM80, wonder how many times they can afford to do it even though they were instructed not to be harmed or taken action upon by LGE.

orhh... so this is a franchise from hindraf lah. The indians are there to provide training.

Maybe these are lim guan eng's supporters. If open and transparent tender, they got no hope to steal. So, it is best to be like before. Can help lim guan eng make billions even. Damn, i am cocksure these are his evil-minded supporters! lol

No water cannon and tear gas troops bcoz they are in KL to handle umno's internal rebelion :P

This Hindraf2 is about as good as Dandruff.

These people are the same, desperate & frustrated. Now they went to the road.

I think judging by the PM's stand, these guys qualify to be roughed up. They are bringing unreasonable demands on the road. Unlike Hindraf and Bersih's demands which is fair for everyone and no violence nor provocation also get water cannon and baton.

That’s why the Police didn’t use water canon or tear gas, from what I heard from an insider, he would have received RM 500 if he was present at the demonstration.

According to him, his cousins were given RM2000 from someone who claims that he was a government secretary for attending the demonstration for only 30 minutes.

Shahidan: "Pak Lah Chose Me"
http://www.rockybru.blogspot.com/

Northern trouble.
AAB wants Shahidan Kasim to be Perlis MB [Letter handed to Shahidan, says PM].
The Sultan had other ideas [Raja Perlis appoints Isa Sabu as MB]. "
But Pak Lah chose me," Shahidan said, as reported in the Star here, and no one should go against Pak Lah's decision, he added.

To add to Abdullah's problems, Shahidan said Azmi Khalid and Radzhi Sheikh Ahmad could be the culprits behind the Raja's decision to appoint Isa.

Pak Lah has asked Hishammuddin Hussein to deal with Mukhriz Mahathir for asking the PM to resign. to resign. Now he'll need to someone to deal with Azmi, Sheikh and the Raja Perlis.

at 8:39 PM

Msiaman,

It is left to the Malays to wake up to the truth of the NEP.

They are just not capable to differentiate between "Affirmative Actions" to help the poor, which is part of the duty of a govt, and "Hand-outs" - that is giving money or property to selected Malays, which is burglarizing the nation to benefit a few Malays at the expense of all the others.

Maverick SM said...

Hasilox,

Ya Hindraf franshise and Hindraf members employed.

Wits0,

hahaha...good analogy but Hasilox want to promote the new franchise.

Tak Tumbuh Tak Melata,

Not true; the demonstrators were employees; paid actors to perform in front of the TV.

Maverick SM said...

Asyraf,

WE need to interview those actors soon.

Ling Ling Chatt,

Shahidan said he will now become an opposition in the state assembly.

Hope said...

I'm so fed-up with these racial issues. When are they going to accept that all of us are Malaysians. We are one entity - not just Malays or Chinese or Indians.

This is our country! United we stand, divided we fall.

ling ling chatt

Pak Lah sent Kerismudin to deal with Mukhriz. The time is near when he will have to send someone to deal with Kerismudin.

He will soon run out of people to send!

If they are complaining about marginalization then they should chase after the previous Regime! Rakyat nak perubahan, that's why BR is elected. Bahlulnya suku-sakat AMNO.

Maverick SM said...

Hopeful,

With the new political paradigm, we Malaysians must continue relentlessly to promote racial harmony and pushed the race-based politicians to oblivion.

Bayi,

Kerismuddin is not going to have it easy.

Mob1900,

Rakyat must continue to push for a new paradigm; a truly Bangsa Malaysia.
